Triple play for BSNL callers

Jamshedpur, May 18: A good news in store for telephone subscribers. They will be able to enjoy different television channels on the existing landline connection.

State-owned telecom major, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is developing necessary infrastructure for introducing triple play facilities, whereby subscribers can avail a video-on-demand service (television channels) along with telephone and broadband on a single landline connection. The tariff for the facility, however, is yet to be decided.

Chief general manager of BSNL (Jharkhand circle), Prem Chandra said the new facility would be put on trial in the next few days at Jamshedpur and Ranchi and would be commercially launched in August. At Jamshedpur, the equipment for the facility is being installed at Kadma and Garamnullah telephone exchanges among others. Chandra said, the equipment for the triple play facility — procured from Siemens, UTS Starcom and Midas — would be installed in six telephone exchanges across the city.

Once the facility is introduced subscribers would be able to watch 100 television channels. It would also have a archive facility to enable viewers to view programmes at their convenience.

General manager of BSNL’s Jamshedpur Secondary Switching Area (SSA), R.K. Mishra said in Jamshedpur, 10,000 subscribers have been targeted.

“We will submit the trial report to BSNL headquarters by June 30. The latest service is expected to start in August,” he said. Telecom engineers would be pressed into service for carrying out the necessary test drive in the city and its adjoining areas, he added.

In the steel city, there are about 30,000 Internet subscribers.

The project cost is expected to be around Rs 30 lakh in the steel city.

Subscribers opting for the service would have to pay a nominal amount as application fees. The service would be available in two categories post-paid and pre-paid.
