Spiny fish

The porcupine puffer fish is an amazing fish as it can inflate its body upto five times its normal size to form a large, spiny ball when alarmed.

The spines on its body are also poisonous and almost all fish avoid feeding on this spiny wonder. The ocean has many predators that prey on defenceless fish that can only run or hide, but the porcupine puffer fish’s spiny armour protects it from these hungry predators.

The puffer fish feeds on molluscs, crabs, snails, crayfish and sea urchins and is therefore a predator in its own right.

It has two strong, fused teeth in its jaws, which prove very helpful when it comes to cracking open hard shells of crustaceans such as crabs. These teeth grow throughout its life.

The porcupine puffer fish is generally found in shallow bays and it moves around in small groups.
