Parent stick for teacher

Ranchi, May 7: A woman teacher of a school here was today assaulted in the classroom by the parents of a girl student allegedly for complaining about the “irresponsible adolescent behaviour” of their daughter.

Kamlesh Sharma and Sanju Saraswati, parents of Pragyan Prakhar — a Class IX student of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir — assaulted biology teacher Alka Chandra on the school premises around 10 am.

Earlier, Pragyan was caught writing a love note in blood to a boy outside the school. Chandra had taken her to the staff room for medical treatment and complained against the student. This allegedly sparked the attack.

The school management has lodged an FIR against the parents and Pragyan’s sister Nidhi Kumari at the Dhurwa police station.

The teacher, Chandra, said the Sharma family, a group of women from Dhurwa and a team of a new channel reached the school this morning. The teacher was beaten up in front of the students of Class IX.

“It was a nightmarish experience when the Sharmas entered my class immediately after lunch period. My saree was torn and arm was twisted in front of the students. He (Sharma) would have rained more blows on my face had I not locked myself in the classroom after pushing them out,” Chandra said.

The reason for the attack, the teacher said, was because she had complained about the girl’s behaviour for her the betterment.

“On May 3, I found Pragyan’s finger cut and her desk painted with blood. I took her to the staff room and administered first aid. The teachers learnt from Pragyan’s classmates that the girl has an immature behaviour,” she said. The matter was brought up before the authorities concerned.

School president Vinay Kumar said the institution had provided free education to Sharma’s two elder children. Principal K.K. Das said the parents were apparently frustrated because the school had not given full scholarship to their third daughter, Pragyan.

The Sharmas refuted the allegations and said they took this action after becoming frustrated with the behaviour of the teachers.

“Last Thursday Chandra and another teacher, Vinod Singh, assaulted my daughter when she refused to take tuition from them. When I tried to contact the two teachers, they did not behave properly. They even questioned the character of my daughter and asked me to contact the school principal,” said Saraswati.

The school’s discipline has deteriorated after Das took charge, she added.

Yesterday, the Sharmas had lodged an FIR against the two teachers for torturing their daughter.

Sharma, an HEC employee, and Pragyan were not available for comments.
