CUP ‘Casualties’

Just as success and failure are integral to sport, so are changes in teams and support staff following every major tournament. The 2007 World Cup was no exception. There were ‘casualties’ among captains, players and coaches — some being dropped/rested, while others bowed out as per earlier announcements. Here’s a look at that list:

COACHES

Bob Woolmer (Pak) — Paid with his life for his team’s failure to beat Ireland; Successor hasn’t yet been named

John Buchanan (Aus) — As announced last year, stepped down once his contract expired at the end of the World Cup; Tim Nielsen will succeed him

Greg Chappell (Ind) — Decided not to seek an extension; Replaced temporarily by Ravi Shastri (cricket manager)

Dav Whatmore (Ban) — To step down after the home series versus India next month, though his term was till the end of the World Cup

Duncan Fletcher (Eng) — Quit at the end of his term; Peter Moores named coach

Adrian Birrel (Ireland) — Quit after a five-year stint

Bennett King (WI) — Resigned; contract was till November 2007

CAPTAINS

Inzamam ul Haq (Pak) — Retired from ODIs. Shoaib Malik named captain

Stephen Fleming (NZ) — Quit ODI captaincy

Brian Lara (WI) — Had announced retirement from ODIs at the end of the World Cup, decided to quit Tests as well

Luuk van Troost (Hol) — Quit international cricket, earning everyone’s respect by dropping himself for the last Cup match due to lack of form

Virender Sehwag (Ind) — Dropped from Test squad

Harbhajan Singh, Ajit Agarkar and Irfan Pathan (Ind) — Dropped from Test and ODI squads
