Poila Baisakh is an event in the Bengali calendar that brings a special glow to the hearts of not just Bengalis, but all Calcuttans. It marks a renewal of hope, of being together with family and friends, and an occasion to celebrate and ring in the new. Notun Alo, a programme showcasing the best of Bengal and the eastern states of India, celebrates the Bengali new year in an exciting, carnival-like atmosphere. Offering novelty and, at the same time, keeping alive Bengal’s cultural traditions, it comprises a fashion show featuring Shamlu Dudeja’s kantha works, Nandita Raja’s ethnic weaves, Ruby Palchowdhury and Crafts Council of West Bengal’s array of traditional designs and Assam weaves. Missing Link, a seven-member Bangla band (picture right) will entertain the audience with pulsating rock beats, rhythmic and melodious folk tunes and some of their own powerful, original tracks. Also, Bihu dance and an art and crafts bazaar. Hosted by Airtel, Tata Steel, Open Doors, Bengal Multiple, Jetex and Tollygunge Club.
