Lightning kills five

Bolpur, April 18: Five people were kill- ed at Dubrajpur and Rajnagar in Birbhum this evening when they were struck by lightning during a norwester.

Three were farmers returning home from their fields, around 260 km from Calcutta, while a couple was struck at home.

Tata petition

Calcutta: The high court has reserved its verdict on a petition by Tata Motors for a special officer at Hindustan Motors in Uttarpara. Tata Motors has said components for manufacturing vehicles, which they had ordered from the Uttarpara factory were stranded there because of labour unrest.

Nandigram

Calcutta: Only the division bench headed by the chief justice can hear the Nandigram firing case as his court had initiated it, the high court said. The hearing has been adjourned till April 26, when the chief judge will return from leave.

Slasher cop

Midnapore: Rakesh Alu, the Calcutta police constable who attacked his lover, her father and brother on Tuesday at Daspur in West Midnapore, about 110 km from Calcutta, was remanded in jail custody till May 2 by Ghatal subdivisional court. The condition of Indrani Boyal and her brother is critical.
