Eye on sops to players

Jamshedpur, April 15: The state government has decided to constitute a board to look after appointment offers and incentives extended to sportspersons.

The board is being formed to put an end to allegations of partiality to sportsmen from a particular discipline. Offers and incentive given to cricketer M.S. Dhoni, archer Jhanu Hansda and boxer Aruna Mishra have often raised such allegations.

Sports minister Bandhu Tirkey said the government has decided to put an end to such complains. “We have decided to constitute a special board in the sports ministry to look after the matter. The board will go through the past performance and academic qualification of every sportsperson in the state and make offers,” said Tirkey.

“With this, I expect the controversies and allegation of partiality to come to an end.”

The process — from constituting the board to making job offers to suitable candidates — will be completed within three months.

Tirkey, who was here today to attend a friendly cricket match between Tata Power and Usha Martin in Kadma, said the committee would make a fresh list of sportspersons who have won medals for the state.

“The government is committed to provide suitable jobs to sportspersons who won medals while representing Jharkhand or India,” Tirkey said.
