Mishap kills 6

Midnapore, April 15: Six people were killed on their way back from a wedding when their mini truck overturned in West Midnapore’s Salboni today.

The truck hit a tree while trying to save a motorcyclist and overturned about 150 km from Calcutta. Four of the dead were women.

Mobike death

Calcutta: Aftab Alam, 25, who was riding pillion on his friend Shankar’s motorcycle, was killed when a truck rammed into it in the Watgunge area on Sunday night. Police said Shankar was trying to overtake the truck from the wrong side.

Scribe dead

Howrah: Sisir Kar, who retired as deputy news editor of Ananda Bazar Patrika in 1994, died on Sunday. He was 72. Kar is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

Witness shot

Krishnagar: Suspected Maoists have shot dead a man who was to stand witness against five rebel leaders. Police said the assailants fired twice at Alam Sheikh, 42, on Sunday afternoon while he was returning home in Nakashipara, 140 km from Calcutta.

Brother killed

Krishnagunj: A farmer beat his brother to death in a Nadia village, apparently because his activities brought shame to the family. Nasiruddin, 25, of Krishnagunj, 140 km from Calcutta, was a smuggler and an alcoholic, police said.
