Youth Congress roots for peace

Guwahati, April 12: The Assam Pradesh Youth Congress has appealed to the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre to carry forward the peace process with Ulfa.

A resolution was adopted last night at an extended executive committee meeting with pressure mounting on Dispur to revive the derailed peace process and respond to the demands of the fasting wives of Ulfa militants who went missing from Bhutan in 2003.

The meeting was held under the supervision of general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, Manik Tagore.

While Delhi and Dispur want unconditional and direct talks, Ulfa wants release of its jailed leaders, information on cadre who went missing in flushout operations in Bhutan and discussion on the issue of sovereignty.

An office-bearer said the organisation had appealed to the Congress-led governments both at the Centre and in the state to bring Ulfa and other insurgent groups to the talks table at the earliest.

He said the meeting demanded that all issues be solved through negotiations.

“The state government is trying for peace but it is our appeal to both Dispur and Delhi to work out a formula to end the deadlock. Violence will not solve problems.”

“Our plea has already reached Dispur and Delhi and things are also moving. We hope the government will take the necessary steps. We also want Ulfa to reciprocate the gesture. We are for lasting peace,” he said.

Another source claimed that the Youth Congress has already got in touch with the home ministry with a plea to revive the peace process.

Writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami, too, has recently sought senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily’s help to convince Delhi to release the jailed Ulfa leaders to revive the peace process.

Goswami had spoken to Moily when the latter had called on her during his visit to the state in the first week of January.

The meeting last night also demanded a metro rail service for the state.

“We request both Dispur and the Centre to take up the proposal in right earnest,” the office-bearer said.

In another resolution, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chief minister Tarun Gogoi were praised for taking the initiative to launch the gas cracker project.

The Youth Congress also resolved to help party candidates win the panchayat polls, hold block and district conventions and mass rallies before the electoral process and, for the first time, constitute Unit Youth Congress committees and organise training camps for them.
