Cola test order

Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the state government to collect Pepsi and Coca-Cola samples from across the state and send them to the Central Food Laboratory to ascertain whether they contain pesticide or other harmful material. The liquid from which the soft drinks are prepared will also have to be tested. The order, by the division bench of Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya, followed a public interest litigation by Idris Ali.

Traffic hit

An SUCI procession, attended by around 8,000 people, brought traffic to a halt in central Calcutta on Friday afternoon. The march, to protest acquisition of farmland for industry, started from Hedua and ended opposite Metro cinema.

Plea rejected

The high court on Friday rejected a petition by the Viswa Jagriti Milan Chakra, seeking permission for using loudspeakers at a programme at Rabindra Sarobar stadium, to be attended by yoga guru Ramdev. The programme will continue from March 21 to 26.

Accident

Ashok Jha, 22, was critically injured after being hit by a taxi on Lalbazar Street on Friday afternoon. He was admitted to Medical College and Hospital. The driver was arrested.

Bomb scare

An abandoned bag in front of the international terminal of Calcutta airport triggered a bomb scare on Friday morning. A team from the bomb disposal squad opened the bag around 11.30 am but found nothing suspicious inside.
