Mike glare on doctor ‘monitors’

Raiganj, March 8: DYFI activists continued “monitoring” doctors at the district hospital, using microphones, for the second day today.

Following an article published in The Telegraph today, the CPM-backed youth wing used sound boxes instead of loudspeakers.

When the programme ended around 12 noon, the youth activists were summoned to the office of Raiganj subdivisional officer (SDO) Dibyendu Das. In the discussion that followed, DYFI supporters signed an undertaking stating that they would abide by the sound restrictions.

“They had written to me seeking permission, but it was not granted. I have allowed them to continue with their programme conditionally. If they violate norms we shall take legal action,” Das said.

Kartik Das, the secretary of the DYFI’s town unit, said there had been a misunderstanding over permission and promised to shift the microphones beyond the restricted zone. He alleged that the doctors were making sound pollution an issue to divert public attention from the original problems.

Joint secretary of Association of Health Service Doctors Dhiman Pal claimed that the doctors were “aware” of their duties. He added that they would not tolerate the interference of any political entity in the day-to-day affairs of hospital administration.
