Govt rides in with traffic flout glare

Jamshedpur, Feb. 26: Large-scale complaints from citizens about traffic congestion have finally forced the administration to take action.

Getting down to serious business, the district administration has issued a warning to all companies in Jamshedpur including Tata Steel to ensure that no trucks are parked on the roads while loading and unloading raw material for the factories.

The administration is also planning to change the no-entry timings from this week and to increase the width of the Dimna Chowk.

East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Nitin Madan Kulkarni today held a meeting with traffic police officials and representatives of different companies to discuss the issue of traffic congestion.

Kulkarni has directed the traffic DSP F.K.N. Kujur to lodge cases under Section 133 of the Criminal Penal Code (which deals with public nuisance) against truck owners who park vehicles near Sunsunia Gate, Burmamines. The entire area is currently congested with trucks parked on the road.

“I have told the representatives of all companies either to ensure that the vehicles coming to supply material are parked within their premises, or to arrange for a parking space. Vehicles should not be parked on the road. Action will be taken against companies adding to traffic congestion,” Kulkarni said.

Keeping in mind the inconvenience, especially of school students, the administration has also decided to change the no-entry timings.

The new timings are likely to be put into effect from this week. At present, the no-entry timing hours extend from 7 am to 9 am and from 2 pm to 9 pm.

The DC said no-entry boards would be put up at all major points in the city. Posters would be also be put up to increase awareness about the no-entry areas.

The administration has also decided to widen the Dimna Chowk and allot a new parking space in Bistupur.

“We have identified a piece of land behind Canara Bank, Bistupur, which has been encroached upon. I will inspect the spot in a day or two, after which the encroachments would be removed for allotting parking space,” Kulkarni added.

Meanwhile, the administration has also issued a warning to the banks for fulfilling their social responsibilities towards the poor or else their branches would be closed in the district.

Kulkarni warned banks that have failed to sanction funds for the Pradhan Mantri Rojgar Yojana and their annual credit plan. Punjab and Sind Bank, Vijaya Bank and Gramin Bank were pulled up for poor credit deposit ratio.
