Shillong, Feb. 20: Meghalaya transporters today decided to call off the indefinite night road blockade which it had called to protest the state government’s decision to reintroduce the high security registration plate scheme.
A joint action coordination committee, comprising 15 vehicle operators and non-governmental organisations, agreed to call off the blockade from tomorrow following a meeting with transport minister Manirul Islam Sarkar and urban affairs minister Prestone Tyngsong.
In October last year, the government had suspended the scheme midway following pressure from the committee.
The transporters’ committee had sought that either the contract with the firm that makes the registration plates should be cancelled or the rates be reduced. “We are happy that the government has agreed to review the contract,” A. Shanpru, chairperson of the committee, said.
