Jamshedpur, Feb. 18: Jargons such as quarterly reports and business process reengineering would now be part of the lexicon of schools here.
Thanks to an initiate taken by Jusco to set Jamshedpur schools on a par with its international counterparts, the educational institutions would soon start operating through a corporate quality model designed by the Confederation of Indian Industries, Institute of Quality, Bangalore.
The move comes in the wake of Tata Steel’s initiative to bring educational excellence in schools here.
A senior member at ASPIRE and business excellence, both departments in Jusco, Harpreet Sokhi, said: “Schools would now function as per the Total Quality Measure (TQM) module designed by CII, which means that schools would now be more organised in their functioning and would have to operate in the way companies do.”
Jamshedpur schools would be the first ones in the country after those in Bangalore to follow this module.
Setting up targets, finishing them on time, sound documentation of every process and equal rights for all would be some of the practices making headway into the hallowed portals.
“During our assessment at of the city schools for the JJ Irani Business Excellence Award, we realised that schools here tremendously lack in discipline,” said Sokhi. “Until the affairs get streamlined, we cannot expect schools to perform better. Therefore schools were given an insight into the functioning of the corporate world and also told of ways to implement such steps.”
A workshop in this regard concluded at Tata Steel Zoological Park this weekend. Over 30 schools are likely to implement the TQM model from the coming academic session.
TQM is the process of achieving a certain level of competence in an organisation striving towards business excellence. This management philosophy focuses on achieving success by scientific methods and overall participation.
In this case, however, Jusco has its eye on a long-term goal, apart from improving quality in education.
Come March, Jusco plans to take the JJ Irani award to the state and national levels. The award of repute given to city schools would now be given to schools across the country after evaluating the quality measures adopted by them in academics and administrative sectors.
“Jusco wants to set Jamshedpur schools as an example for other schools to follow. Thus this initiative (TQM) would be extended to schools in other cities as well,” added Sokhi.
