Award for students’ association

Jamshedpur, Feb. 4: The Jamshedpur unit of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has bagged the prestigious award for being the “best performing district” of Jharkhand.

An enthused unit has now decided to intensify its agitation for conducting students’ union elections and setting up of a separate university in Jamshedpur.

The president of Jamshedpur (town) unit of NSUI, Rajnish Singh, said Jamshedpur was the only district from Jharkhand to be selected for the honour. The award is given by the party high command to one district unit from a state on the basis of activities done by it. The students’ wing of the Congress has 10,000 members in Jamshedpur NSUI, which consists of two smaller units — town and rural.

While the town unit is headed by Singh, the rural unit is headed by Surendra Sharma. Both were felicitated by the party president, Sonia Gandhi, recently.

Singh claimed that the NSUI’s Jamshedpur unit (both town and rural) took up the cause of the student community effectively during the last week, which was also recognised by the party leadership.
