Open session on safe sex

Ranchi, Jan. 18: In an attempt to make teenagers aware of safe sex, a parents’ counselling session was held at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dipatoli today.

Under the national adolescence education, the programme is expected to be held in different school systems of the CBSE board. The programme, to be held in 950 Kendriya Vidyalayas nation wide, has been supported by Unicef.

Speaking to the parents in the open meeting today, S.K. Mishra, the chief counsellor, said: “The biggest enemy of an adolescent is the age. The duty of bringing them up with utmost care is the biggest challenge before a parent.”

Co-speaker and vice-principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dipatoli, G. Jha said: “Adolescent children often feel grown up. They want to be important when it comes to take decisions. However, they are not to be blamed as it is the hormonal changes inside their bodies that make them feel this way.”

According to Mishra, children between the age of 11 to 19 years do not know the complexities of unsafe sex.

Speaking on the adversaries of AIDS, Mishra said during this time, teenagers involve themselves in relationships. Parents should be extra careful to deal with this situation. After the session, Mishra faced a volley of questions by the attending parents.

Maya Singh, a parent, said: “My daughter studies in Class IX. I want to know what to do when I find a love letter from my daughter’s bag.” Kiran Bala, another parent, said: “Most of the time, my husband is out of town. The problem is my son does not listen to me. How can I talk to him about such sensitive issues?”

In reply, Mishra said: “We need to tackle these issues carefully. Extra care should be taken to ensure that children do not fall into bad company during this phase.”
