Fourth seed Akash upset

Wild card entrant Yuki Bhambri upset fourth seed Akash Gujarati 6-3, 6-3 at the ONGC-ITF Juniors at the DKS Sports Complex on Wednesday. It took 73 minutes for Bhambri to win the match.

The girls’ event also saw the fourth seed Uzbek Nigora Sirojiddinova going down to Ukraine’s Yuliya Golbobodko 1-6, 4-6 in an 85-minute affair.

Boys qualifier Sundhanwa Sitaram ousted third seed B. Vikram Reddy in a three-setter 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The day’s other upset was scripted by another qualifier Christopher Marquis, who packed off the fifth seeded Thai lad Khunpol Issara 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in 95 minutes.

Shanker wins

Shanker Roy with nine points won the State Chess Championship after notching up an unassailable lead at the end of the 10th round at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra on Wednesday. Laltu Chatterjee and Arindam Mukherjee were placed second with 7.5 points. The final-round matches will be played on Thursday.

Debasree to lead

Debasree Dey will lead the Bengal squad for the 71st Senior National Badminton Championships to be held in Patna from Saturday. The squad will leave on Saturday itself.
