Teenager killed in road mishap
Nineteen-year-old student Avijit Ghosh died and three others were injured after a motorcycle knocked down a bicycle on Belghoria expressway on Sunday night. Avijit was carrying a friend on a bicycle when it was hit by the motorcycle. The four were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Avijit was later shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he died.
In another road mishap on Monday morning, Sanjib Sarkar, 57, was critically injured after being knocked down by a private bus on route 57 at the crossing of Old Court House Street and Waterloo Street. Sarkar was taken to SSKM Hospital.
Homicide probe
Intervention of the high court has forced Calcutta Police to switch a simple death case into a culpable homicide case and arrest two Tangra youths. Sonu Rajak, 23, a resident of Christopher Road, was allegedly lynched on September 26, 2005. Police had started a simple death case. Sonu’s 70-year-old father Lalu had moved a case against police inaction. Justice G. Gupta of the high court had asked the cops to conduct a fresh inquiry and place a report before him. On Monday, the police advocate informed the court that Nata Babu and Lamba Babu had been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder following the fresh probe.
Airline offer
Thai Airways on Monday announced a special fare of Rs 6,845 on the Calcutta-Bangkok-Calcutta route from January 23 to February 28. The airline will operate daily flights between Calcutta and Bangkok from March 25.
New course
Calcutta University on Monday introduced an undergraduate course in environmental science. The university’s council for undergraduate studies approved the proposal for starting the course at a meeting in the afternoon. Environmental science is taught at the university at the postgraduate level.
Train route
The Howrah-Mumbai Mail via Allahabad will be terminated at Dadar instead of Mumbai CST from January 16 to 21. Officials of Eastern Railway said on Monday that this was due to maintenance work at Mumbai CST yard.
Debt suicide
Unable to repay loans, Tarun Roy, 30, a Group D staff of New Secretariat, committed suicide on Monday by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house on Raja Manindra Road, under Tallah police station. Police said Tarun had taken to gambling and had borrowed from several people. No suicide note was found. Tarun is survived by his wife, a teacher, and a three-year-old son.
Body found
The body of an unidentified man, aged about 40, was found in an abandoned room on Bidhan Sarani on Sunday. Police said the body bore no external injuries. A post-mortem will be done.
Railway parade
Naranbhai J. Rathwa, minister of state for railways, attended the passing-out parade of the first batch of Railway Protection Force constables at Eastern Railway’s zonal parade ground at Kanchrapara on Sunday.
