Paddlers raise quit-camp cry

Jorhat, Jan. 9: The ongoing coaching camp for the Assam table tennis team at the Kushal Konwar Indoor stadium has run into rough weather with the players threatening to quit the camp citing the organisers’ failure to provide proper food.

The 14-member team, including eight girls, is preparing for the National Games slated to be held next month. The 15-day camp, which started from December 31, is the second one of its kind. The third and last camp is scheduled at Guwahati from January 23.

A senior player at the camp told The Telegraph that the food being provided by the hotel where the team has put up is “just next to horrible”.

Another participant said they are being provided the same food from day one. “We are being made to eat the same food that the hotel provides its customers. How can we concentrate on our practice without a proper diet?” he said.

The players today lodged a formal complaint with the co-ordinator of the camp who assured them that the matter would be looked into immediately. Pankaj Shrutikar, the co-ordinator of the camp, said the players have complained to him about the food.

Senior officials from the state table tennis association arrived at the Jorhat camp this evening to hold discussions with the players.

The table tennis camp has been a damp squib from the very beginning with the organisers failing to meet their promise of bringing in a Chinese coach to train the state team. At present, a coach from Calcutta is training the team.

“The Chinese coach could not be brought owing to some passport related problems,” an organiser said.
