Railmen surge into qrts

Mangaldoi, Jan. 8: In-form railman Dipankar Banerjee proved the man with the golden arm today, pushing Tinsukia Railway Divisional into the quarterfinals of the 11th Dibyajyoti, Maizuddin, Dilip, Debo all-Assam prizemoney cricket tournament.

Dipankar, who notched four of his opponents’ wickets, also wielded the willow with panache to be adjudged Man of the Match.

North Lakhimpur District Students’ Union XI lost to the railmen by five wickets in the pre-quarterfinal played at Mangaldoi College ground.

Choosing to bat, the Lakhimpur boys were bundled out for 94 runs in 27.4 overs. Tinsukia reached 96 in 20.2 overs with five wickets in hand. Partha Pratim Gogoi topscored for Lakhimpur with 25 runs, while wicketkeeper-batsman Noor Alam Sheikh contributed 16.

Dipankar gave away only 20 runs against his four-wicket haul, while Sunny Ahmed and Pranjal Jyoti Sarma scalped two each for seven and 16 runs respectively.

Dipankar also topscored for his side with 26 runs (3x4,1x6). Baburam Magor remained close behind on 22 (3x4, 1x6). Dwipen Mahanta (18) and B.M. Rao (12) were the other useful scorers.

Mridul Dutta, Mridul Konwar, Bikram Chetry and Bhrigu Gogoi took a wicket each for Lakhimpur.

Bud Cricket Club (A) face Ankurjyoti Club in the first quarterfinal tomorrow.

The tournament is being organised by the Darrang district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union.
