Seizure backlash

Durgapur, Jan. 4: Two officers of the motor vehicles department were beaten up by a group of drivers and helpers at the Punjabi More crossing on National Highway 2 this morning after they seized an overloaded truck.

The mob also took away the truck, which was carrying coal. The officers, Subrata Naskar and Tarun Dutta, were injured and were taken to a nursing home in Ranigunj, 220 km from Calcutta. Eight persons have been arrested till late tonight, police said.

Ambulances

Krishnagar: The Nadia administration has tied up with 16 NGOs for providing ambulances to all 16 block hospitals in the district. District magistrate .S. Meena said the government will also provide funds to NGOs for carrying pregnant women to hospital in the ambulances.

Land clash

Behrampore: Congress and RSP supporters clashed on Thursday over an agricultural plot in Suti, about 275 km from Calcutta. Bombs were hurled by both groups, which left several injured. Police said some Congress activists also torched two houses belonging to RSP workers. Three persons, including two women, have been arrested.
