Suvrajit beats Thipsay; Surya still on top

Ahmedabad: G. Rohit, a 17-year-old Andhra boy and IM Suvrajit Saha scored upset wins in the 12th and penultimate round of the 44th National A Chess Championship at Atul Club here Thursday. Rohit beat third-seeded IM D.P. Singh and Suvrajit outwitted GM Pravin Thipsay.

The top seed, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, consolidated his position with a draw against 17-year-old G.N. Gopal to be on course for a fourth successive title. Surya has a tally of 8.5 points. Surya must win Friday to win the title.

Jointly in second spot are GM Deepan Chakravarthy and IM Arun Prasad (8 each). Deepan agreed to a draw with IM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury and IM Prasad stopped the dream run of 16-year-old Aslwin Jayram.

Next in line is a pack of five players — Gopal, GM Abhijit Kunte, G. Rohit, Suvrajit and GM Neelotpal Das — with 7.5 points each.
