Police review meeting today
The annual meeting of the central government to review modernisation of police forces across the country will be held at a city hotel on Tuesday. Police chiefs of Calcutta, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Bangalore will attend the meeting, to be chaired by Union home secretary V.K. Duggal. This is the first time Calcutta is hosting the meeting.
Two killed in mishap
Two persons died and five others were injured after being hit by a private bus in Titagarh, on the northern fringes of the city, on Monday morning. Police said two buses on route 78 were racing against each other on their way to the city from Barrackpore. One of the buses lost control and hit pedestrians before ramming into Titagarh police station. The buses were impounded, but the drivers fled.
Crushed to death
A middle-aged man was run over by a private bus on Sahapur Road, in Alipore, on Monday morning. Police said the victim fell off the footboard of the rear gate of the bus. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Accident
Surajit Banik, 25, was critically injured after being hit by an autorickshaw on Canal East Road, in Beleghata, on Monday morning. He was admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical. The autorickshaw driver has been arrested.
Varsity lecture
Mani L. Bhaumik will deliver the third Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Memorial Lecture, organised by Netaji Subhas Open University, at a city hotel on Tuesday. Bhaumik is president of Cosmogenics, Los Angeles.
Yoga conference
A three-day international conference on Frontiers in Yoga Research and Applications, organised by Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, started on Monday.
Drawing contest
More than 1,000 children took part in the 12th All Bengal Sit and Draw Contest, held in Madhyamgram, on the northern fringes of the city, on Monday.
