Crash kills five

Barasat, Dec. 17: Five labourers were killed when two trucks collided on Jessore Road here tonight. A Calcutta-bo- und truck rammed into one going to Duttapukur, 25 km from the city. Police said the victims — from Canning, South 24-Parganas — were on the truck going to the city.

Howrah: The 97th annual general meeting of the Ramakrishna Mission was held at Belur Math on Sunday. A statement issued after it said the mission has started new centres at Vadodara in Gujarat, Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh. It has opened a charitable dispensary with an eye operation theatre at Kamarpukur in Hooghly, an eye-care centre at Muzaffarpur, an intensive care unit and OT at Vrindavan, a mobile medical unit at Itanagar and a blood component separation unit and neorosurgery ward in Lucknow.

Jawan shot

Durgapur: Coal smugglers killed CISF jawan Chandu Ram, 28, at Damagoria colliery in Kulti on Saturday night. The thieves shot Ram the moment he turned the searchlight on them in the Asansol mine, 240 km from Calcutta.

Mill death

Howrah: A jute mill worker was shredded in a machine that makes ropes from fibres on Sunday. The death of T. Dharma Rao, 40, who was cleaning the machine while it was working, sparked protests at Ganges Park in Shibpur and demands for compensation for his family.
