Jamshedpur, Dec. 14: This Christmas, it will be wedding bells for Maya as she ties the knot with Manjeet Singh on December 24.
Maya has never had a taste of family life since she was two years old. Shishu Niketan, a wing of the All India Women’s Conference (AIWC), has brought her up ever since she was found abandoned, and successfully played the role of responsible parents to find a suitable husband.
For a girl who was always interested in pursuing her creative instincts, Maya finished matriculation from Kadma High School and took a formal training in embroidery, which helped her in her couple of years’ stint at a city boutique.
“She ensured that she kept herself engaged in some creative activity or the other and seldom has she complained of anything,” said Kanchan Singh, a senior member of AIWC.
In a first of its kind for a girl of Shishu Niketan, the marriage proposal came to AIWC through a direct interaction with the bridegroom’s family.
“Usually, a proposal comes through some community member, but Manjeet’s family took the initiative by approaching the organisation for a suitable bride for their only son,” said Singh.
Manjeet, a resident of Baridih, works as a temporary contract painter at the Tinplate Company of India Limited and stays with his mother. They approved of Maya at the first go.
“Both of them liked each other and we ensure that all girls give their consent willingly,” added Singh.
AIWC is now contemplating of making such happy occasions a regular feature in their annual calendar.
