Day 2: Tata pugilists still lead

Jamshedpur, Dec. 5: Tata Boxing Centre (TBC) pugilists continued their good run on the second day of the 3rd State Boxing Championship, after winning most of their matches, being played at JRD Tata Sports Complex here today.

In the sub-junior boys’ section, S. Ghosh, P. Sona and M.B. Lakra defeated R. Lohar and T. Bodra (from Seraikela) and A. Thakur (Giridih) respectively in the C-4, A-8 and C-5 weight categories.

The TBC pugilists also reigned supreme in the sub-junior women’s section as they smashed their way to victory. While R. Kumari defeated P. Kujur of East Singhbhum in the C-5 weight category, A. Tirkey of TBC defeated Neha of Bokaro in the B-7 weight category.

TBC pugilists led in the sub-junior boy’s section as well. D. Sahu of TBC defeated Alvis Anthony of East Singhbhum in the E-3 category. R.S. Yadav of TBC went on to defeat R.D. Singh, also of TBC, in the A-10 weight category.

The TBC pugilists also won their bouts in the lightweight, lightweight welter and middle-weight categories.

Sanjay Das of TBC defeated Suraj Prasad of West Singhbhum in the lightweight category, while S. Rabbani of TBC defeated Sailesh Kumar of Community Development and Social Welfare in the lightweight welter category.

In the other categories TBC continued to rule as P. Sandil, M. Ravi Kumar, Alok Kumar, Govind Solanki, all from the Tata centre, emerged as winners.

Altogether, 124 pugilists from 13 districts across Jharkhand took part in the championship, which will conclude on December 6.

While a total of 84 bouts would be played in all, there would be 41 bouts in the final.

There would be nine weight categories in the senior men’s and seven in the junior men’s, section.

Similarly, there would be 13 weight categories in the sub-junior boys’ section, while there would seven weight categories in the women’s section.

Pugilists from East and West Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Gumla, Lohardaga, Bokaro, Giridih and other districts are also taking part in the event.
