Cricket tourney to begin today

Jamshedpur, Nov. 7: Cricket lovers of the steel city would get to see a surfeit of young talents who will leave no stone unturned to make a mark in the Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) Elite Group A matches, which kicks-off tomorrow.

While defending champions Maharashtra takes on Mumbai at Keenan Stadium, Punjab plays Uttar Pradesh at the Armoury grounds.

Barring the Mumbai team, which arrived in the evening, other teams went through their paces in the nets today. The Tamil Nadu team is yet to arrive.

Maharashtra coach Chandrakant Pandit, a former Test stumper, said he had strong batting side, which is complimented with a balanced bowling attack. “We are not underestimating our opponents but we are confident of our capabilities,” the coach said.

Punjab, too, is waiting with a formidable line-up. Having lost the opportunity to qualify for the knockout stage last season, the team seems raring to make amends. The outfit has four players — skipper Sumit Sharma, Sunny Sohal, Amanprit Singh and Karanvir Singh — who have donned India’s under-19 colours.

Punjab coach Arun Bedi did not seem very happy with the track at the Armoury grounds. “I don’t think the wicket will last for three days. It is an under-prepared track and winning the toss would be crucial,” Bedi said.

Uttar Pradesh will also bank on their batsmen. “Though Uttar Pradesh did not qualify for the knockout round of this tournament last season, we have won the Cooch Behar Trophy more than once,” said coach Sarvesh Mehrotra.
