Drugs controller seizes banned cough syrup

Aizawl, Nov. 3: The Mizoram drugs controller wing of the health department seized a consignment of banned cough syrup yesterday.

The consignment, under the brand name of C-KOF, was sent to a medicine shop. The son of the president of Mizoram Drugs Wholesalers Association, Lalhmingliana, owns the shop.

Acting on a tip-off, officers of drugs control raided the godown of Road King Transport yesterday afternoon and seized 3,500 bottles of the cough syrup in 100-ml containers.

Documents revealed the consignee was located on Hospital Road in the city. On searching the medicine shop, another 2,500 bottles of the same cough syrup was found and seized by the officials.

Assistant drugs controller Lalsawma has been quoted by a source as saying that the drugs licence of this shop had been cancelled earlier on account of violating drugs laws. However, the license was later revoked.

Officials of drugs control said the real license holder of this drugs store is Teresa Vanlaldiki, Lalhmingliana’s daughter.

A source from the drugs control office said the consignment had been seized because there were grounds to believe that the medicine had been procured illegally.

The medicine had been procured from a Guwahati-based company.

The drugs control office said it would keep the medicines under seizure for 20 days during which they would conduct further investigations.
