Protest ends in slit throat
- Youth killed for raising voice against sister dowry torture

Malda, Nov. 1: A 31-year-old youth was killed in Bamongram village under Kaliachak police station for allegedly protesting against torture on his sister by her in-laws.

The body of Mustafa Sheikh was found in a mango grove this morning with his throat slit. He had allegedly been hacked to death by a group of seven assailants who later slit his throat.

Mustafa’s sister Sufia had been married to Nadim Sheikh of Harugram two years ago. According to a complaint lodged with the police by Sufia’s elder brother Jahirudin Sheikh, Nadim, his brother Nasef and father Hadim Sheikh had been torturing her for a dowry.

Mustafa went to Sufia’s in-laws’ house this morning to sort out the problem with Nadim. After talks with Sufia’s husband, he was returning to his house at Zaluabathan village when he was attacked by the assailants.

Eyewitnesses told police that they had wanted to know from the goons why they were dragging Mustafa to the orchard. They were told that the victim owed them money and they were taking him to their locality to realise it.

District superintendent of police Dilip Mondal said an inquiry has begun. The police, Mondal said, had also talked to Sufia. However, he declined to divulge what Sufia had told them. None of the accused have been arrested as they had already fled the area. “The man who has been killed had a criminal past as did those who murdered him,” the police chief said.
