Rapist held from RIMS terrace

Ranchi, Oct. 31: The alleged rapist of a 52-year-old woman at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was today held from the same fourth-floor terrace, where he is accused of having lured his victim yesterday.

Today also the culprit was with a woman, who first claimed to be his wife and then his sister-in-law when RIMS security held them on suspicion. When the couple was taken to the Bariatu police station, the rapist was immediately identified by yesterday’s victim.

A deceptive calm prevailed at RIMS this afternoon, broken only by a small demonstration by the JMM to protest the incident yesterday.

The supervisor of the private security agency, namely G-Alert, Rajeev Ranjan Singh, was in fact showing this correspondent the security arrangements in the hospital. He took this correspondent through one floor after another before reaching the roof.

The presence of a couple at the secluded place aroused the suspicion of both this correspondent and the security in-charge. The woman appeared to be in his fifties while the man looked much younger.

The couple, on being questioned, claimed they were attending to a patient and that they were husband and wife. The security-in-charge called for reinforcement and began quizzing the couple for details.

The couple tried to leave the place first. But when the security-in-charge held the man back, he suddenly broke free, pushed this correspondent aside and rushed towards the stairs. He also started screaming that anti-social elements were after him.

He clambered down the stairs, chased by security men, and managed to reach the first floor before he was finally nabbed. The woman too was apprehended by then by a female attendant of RIMS.

The couple reinforced the suspicion by giving contradictory statements. While the man claimed that the two planned to get married, the woman asserted that the man was actually her brother-in-law.

While the woman identified herself as a resident of Tetar Toli in Bariatu, the man gave his name as Shamim Ansari. The woman said she worked on daily wages while the man did not disclose his occupation.

The high-drama, however, did not end there. Once the couple was handed over to Bariatu police, the man was startled to find the woman, who had claimed to have been raped by him, sitting at the police station.

He tried to hide his face, prompting policemen to produce him before the lady, who immediately recognised the man and started crying.

The man, who was her son’s age, had boasted, she recalled, that he raped one woman every day.
