Jamshedpur, Oct. 29: Apparently not concerned about the threat of environmental degradation, members of the younger generation asserted the need of a stronger economy and industrial development.
At the annual Association of British Scholars (ABS) debate for the Tata Steel Rolling Trophy, organised at the TMDC auditorium yesterday the motion put before the house was — “Developing countries should maintain a low profile on environmental issues”.
While the need to concentrate on the resources emerged at the forefront for those speaking for the motion, those arguing against it showed concern by advocating a sustainable growth for developing nations.
Most admitted that “poverty” and “need” are the greatest polluters in a developing nation.
“Where is the time to sit back and ponder for environment in this age of endeavours to improve the country’s gross domestic product?” argued Ruchi Tiwary, speaking for the motion.
Elaborating on the rising issues of health hazards in a polluted environment, Tanmoy Chakraborty speaking against the motion gave startling statistics on the number of diseases in developing countries.
However, the fact that natural resources were being overused was something that was agreed upon by most speakers.
Hill Top school emerged winner and would represent the city in the semi-final round slotted to take place at the Tata auditorium on November 2 to be followed by the grand finale.
