Mystery call

Mumbai, Sept. 9: Maharashtra police are probing a phone call made to the Government Railway Police on August 24 that may have roughly predicted yesterday’s blasts.

The call was made from a public booth in Nashik to the GRP control room in Wadi Bunder, rural Nashik.

“The caller had identified himself as a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative and had spoken of a possible strike around Igatpuri, Manmad and Nashik areas in 10 days,” Ramrao Pawar, deputy commissioner (Central Railway), said. Malegaon falls in Nashik district.

Anti-terrorist squad officers confirmed that the state police had been told about the incident. “Nashik police had prepared a sketch based on eyewitness accounts, but as they were not sure how accurate it was, the case was abandoned,” an officer said.
