Neglect cry in
balcony collapse
A portion of the balcony on the second floor of a women’s hostel of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital collapsed on Sunday afternoon. No one was injured. Police said the broken chunk fell in a park adjacent to the hostel. Boarders alleged that the hospital authorities did not take steps to repair the building despite several requests.
Agitation withdrawn
Students on hunger strike at Medical College and Hospital to protest quotas at institutes of higher studies withdrew their agitation on Saturday night. The students were protesting under the banner of Youth for Equality.
Fake note arrest
Bipul Mondol, 25, was arrested on Sunday on charges of running a fake currency racket. Fake notes worth Rs 20,000 were seized from him. An officer of Jadavpur thana said Mondol was arrested following the interrogation of two Bangladeshi nationals who were held on similar charges.
Murder charge
A murder case has been registered following the recovery of the body of three-year-old Saifuddin Mondol from a roadside ditch in Baguiati on Saturday afternoon. Police said the case has been registered under Section 302 of IPC.
Library unveil
Nirmal Smriti Pathagar, at Mukundapur in east Jadavpur, will be thrown open to the public on September 6. Samarendra Nath Roy, chairman of borough committee 12, said the library has been set up by Charan Kabi Mukundadas Memorial Charitable Trust. It will cater to children from the economically weak section.
Warders’ plea
Warders of Presidency, Alipore and Dum Dum central jails have written around 4,000 open letters to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee urging him to accept their nine-point charter of demands, including supply of essential commodities through the public distribution system. A spokesman for the Pashchim Banga Kararakshmi Samity said warders should be provided with ration on a par with policemen.
Metro service
Metro Railway services on Sundays will start from 1 pm, instead of 2 pm, for the benefit of Puja shoppers. This will continue till September 24.
Bangla nationals
Two Bangladeshis were arrested in Tiljala on Saturday night while they were moving around suspiciously. Police said the two could not produce passports.
