Sumo in CM ring

Calcutta, Aug. 22: A Tata Sumo fitted with a beacon breached the chief minister’s security cordon on VIP Road around 9.15 this evening.

False customs I-cards and a toy pistol were found on six Sumo passengers, who were arrested. Police said they threatened security personnel for not allowing them free passage and slapped constable Arun Sarkar. The chief minister was on his way home from the airport.

CNG supply

Durgapur: The Great Eastern Energy Corporation has proposed help to provide CNG to over 20,000 light vehicles and 200 buses in Asansol and Durgapur from 2007. Commerce and industries secretary Sabyasachi Sen said the government has assured “all infrastructure support”.

PM visit

Calcutta: Prime min-ister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Asansol to flag off the IISCO revival project has been called off because of the Katwa byelection. The model code of conduct is in force for the September poll.
