Jewel edge past SAI
- Powermen face defending champions today

Guwahati, Aug. 9: Jewel Star Club today came from behind to post a 2-1 win over Sports Authority of India SC in the Travel Smart-R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super League football tournament at Nehru Stadium here.

Mintu Boro put SAI in a commanding position in the very first minute, pumping in a goal off a goalmouth melee seconds after the kickoff.

However, the dominance was shortlived as nimble-footed Jewel Star striker Utpal Das equalised in the 13th minute. He capitalised on a pass from fellow forward Rahajuddin Ahmed.

The proceedings were evenly poised, with either side raiding the opponent’s territory at regular intervals.

One of the raids paid off in Jewel Star’s favour when referee Sushanta Sen awarded a free kick and Partha Baksi made no mistake in converting it with ease for the all-importer matchwinner in the 40th minute.

The Jewel Star side led 2-1 at the breather. Neither team managed to score in the second session. Though SAI made an all-out effort in the last few moments of the match, most of their moves were countered by the Jewel Star defenders.

With today’s win, Jewel Star have collected 11 points from six matches, while SAI have four.

Assam State Electricity Board face defending champions Assam Polices Blues in a clash of titans tomorrow.
