Lufthansa, to launch operations between Calcutta and Frankfurt from December 1, is planning a daily flight from the city. The German airline is making a comeback after over three decades. It will initially operate three flights between Calcutta and Frankfurt.
“Our objective is to have daily flights from Calcutta to Frankfurt. The first step is three flights. The frequency will later be increased to seven a week,” said Werner Heesen, general manager (passenger sales, India) and director (South Asia) of Lufthansa, on Tuesday. Heesen was in the city to formally announce the launch of operations.
The airline also announced a promotional return fare of Rs 19,900 (excluding taxes) for Frankfurt and Rs 35,000 for New York and Los Angeles, from the city. Passengers can avail of the special fare till November 15.
In this sector, Lufthansa will operate the Airbus 340-300 with in-flight facilities like FlyNet, enabling passengers to access high-speed wireless Internet. The aircraft has eight first class, 54 business class and 173 economy class seats.
“Lufthansa will cater to a new segment of leisure tourists. We also expect a flow of business traffic, especially exporters, importers and IT professionals,” said Anil Punjabi, chairman (East), Travel Agents Federation of India.
