Belugas are fish, which are really big and weigh up to 1,200 kg! They are found in the basins of the Caspian and Black seas, the Adriatic Sea and the Sea of Azov. The beluga or Huso huso belongs to the sturgeon order and like all members of the family, it is a freshwater and coastal fish.
During winter, belugas migrate into rivers where they spawn on rocky river beds. Little belugas move towards the sea almost immediately, and on their way, gain strength by feeding on small invertebrates found at the bottom of the river. Adults mostly feed on fish like herring and other members of the carp family.
Apart from fishing, which is one of the reasons behind their depleting numbers, less and less belugas can be seen nowadays because of their eggs that are used for caviar.
