Voted as one of the friendliest campuses in the UK, the University of Wolverhampton offers over 340 courses. From forensic science to digital media, from hotel management to sports coaching, there is a wide range of subject options to study at the 10 schools of this university. Associate dean John M. Pymm talks to Tessy Koshy about the specialised job-oriented courses offered at the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure
Why should an Indian student
want to study at the University of Wolverhampton?
Besides the variety of study options that students
can choose from, Wolverhampton has a number of Indian restaurants.
It is also known for its sensitivity to other cultures and
has cheap housing options. As a result, the number of Indian
students at our campuses has grown rapidly over the years.
What are the popular courses
among Indian students?
Indian students are interested in career-oriented
courses. We get a lot of students for hospitality management
and other related subjects. Students can choose from a range
of courses in this discipline — from MA in hospitality management
to undergraduate degree programmes in tourism management,
international hospitality management, event and venue management
and leisure management.
What is the the School
of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure best known for?
We were recently placed eighth in the whole of the
UK for our tourism course. We also have very strong links
with the hotel and hospitality industry and are nationally
recognised for our sports courses. Sports management is
a fairly new area but has massive growth opportunities.
Wolverhampton has a wide range of undergraduate courses
in sport –– programmes in physical education, sports studies,
equine and human sports performance, sports coaching, etc.
The university is home to a national judo centre of excellence,
a national league basketball team and it also has a swimming
pool, an athletics track and research labs accredited by
the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science.
Is the selection of students
based on academic performance or admission tests?
Students are selected on the basis of their educational
and other achievements. They are called for a personal interview
with our faculty during their visits to India. Students
need at least 55 per cent marks in Class XII and 55 to 60
per cent marks in graduation to be eligible to apply. We
have two intakes per year, in September and January.
What about fees and scholarships?
The tuition fee for one year is
£7,500 with an additional £600 for accommodation and food.
We have a bursary of £750 for Indian students and scholarships
worth £1,000 for students who have outstanding academic
excellence. We make a conditional offer to the selected
students upon a deposit of £3,000 after the interview in
India. They can apply for a visa on the basis of this offer
letter.
