Orissa girls best


Chandigarh: Orissa upset title-favourites Manipur 1-0 to win the third girls’ under-17 National Football Championship here on Thursday.
The winner was scored by Rashmita Podh in the 44th minute. Manipur dominated the game but could not breach the rival defence. The result was sweet revenge for Orissa who suffered defeat at the hands of Manipur in the final last year.


McBride retires


Chicago: Brian McBride of the US has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 13-year international career that included appearances in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He scored 30 goals in 95 matches.


Emerson deal


Madrid: Brazilian midfielder Emerson completed his move to Real Madrid from Juventus after passing a routine medical on Wednesday. Emerson, who signed a three-year contract, received a Madrid shirt bearing his name but without a number at his presentation at the Bernabeu.


Ruud in Real


Madrid: Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will join Real Madrid from Manchester United on a three-year contract, the Primera Liga club said on Thursday.


Bhullar leads


Calcutta: Gaganjeet Bhullar carded a two-under 70 on Day II to take sole lead at the Royal Challenge Northern India Amateur Golf Championship on Thursday.
