Court order on Tagore paintings

Justice Aniruddha Bose of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the Rabindra Bharati Society to hand over a list of paintings and other belongings of Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore and others to the Rabindra Bharati University authorities within two weeks. The order was passed on a plea by university lawyer Subrata Mukhopadhyay. arlier, a court-appointed officer had broken open the strongroom, in which 5,430 paintings of the members of the Tagore family and others were stored by the Society. The Society was involved in a tussle with university students following its attempt to shift some paintings to Victoria Memorial. The students had prevented Society members from entering the university. hen the Society moved the high court demanding an order against the students, the university authorities alleged that the petitioner had failed to preserve the paintings and other belongings of the Tagore family.

Malaria death

Azmiree Begum, 40, a resident of Topsia?s Gulam Jilani Khan Road, died of malignant malaria on Tuesday. Chief municipal health officer Deb Dwaipayan Chattopadhyay said Azmiree was admitted to Beleghata Infectious Diseases Hospital. She is the first victim of malignant malaria in the city this year. Last year, three patients had died.

CalTel offer

Calcutta Telephones on Tuesday announced that the price of BSNL?s lifetime prepaid card for mobile phone, Excel Anant, has been reduced. A CalTel spokesperson said the price has been slashed from Rs 949 to Rs 699 for a period of one month, starting Wednesday. The offer also includes a free activation and talktime worth Rs 50. The offer can be availed of only by CalTel subscribers.

Extortionist held

An alleged extortionist was arrested in Behala on Tuesday. Police said Sheikh Raju was caught red-handed while he was demanding money from a restaurant owner. A gun was seized from him.

Township protest

A group of autorickshaw drivers on Tuesday morning demonstrated against the launching of IT Special bus services between the Chingrihata-EM Bypass crossing and Karunamoyee, via Sector V. The first bus was scheduled to leave Chingrihata at 8.30 am. But the protesters did not allow the bus to move. The situation was brought under control after the intervention of police and CSTC and Bidhannagar Municipality officials. The first bus left at 9.45 am.

Power cuts

Residents of the Dhakuria, Selimpur, Babubagan, Viveknagar, Sarat Ghosh Garden Road and the Jheel Road areas may face power cuts for two hours, between 9.30 am and 11.30 am, on Wednesday. CESC will carry out maintenance work at its Dhakuria distribution station.

Frauds in net

Three men, in their early 30s, were arrested on Tuesday on charges of trying to dupe people by promising them jobs in the income-tax department. Police said the trio had made a few lakhs by promising jobs to youths. They were picked up in front of the income-tax building at 3, Government Place (North).

Knocked down

An man, aged around 40, was knocked down by a private bus on route 234/1 on BB Ganguly Street, at the Bank of India crossing, on Tuesday evening. He was taken to Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The bus was impounded but the driver fled.
