Genie in a bottle

With reference to Be careful with this brave new world (June 26), the article reminded me of the Nazi plan of creating a pure Aryan race. What would then have happened to Jews and gypsies in Europe' I presume that these new technologies being developed are like genie in a bottle, waiting to be let out. There’s no doubt that these sophisticated technologies will benefit us in our everyday life. But I guess that a large number of people won’t be able to afford them.

AIDS taboo

With reference to Living with AIDS (June 26), it’s really sad to know that our country is slowly losing the battle against AIDS. We should shed our inhibitions and make a joint effort to combat this disease. For it is still a taboo for the Indian society. I seriously hope that we would be able to do away with our inhibitions and discuss the subject of sex and sexuality openly, as it will broaden our horizon. If we don’t start now, we will never be able to wipe out the disease.

Cleaner Calcutta'

With reference to How clean is my city' (July 3), it can be said that our political leaders have the greatest responsibility towards maintaining a clean city. But it’s distressing to see that the people coming to our city from the outskirts or other cities in search of a livelihood are the ones who make Calcutta dirtier. Even Calcuttans don’t bother about its cleanliness. A lack of proper drainage and sewage system and proper maintenance of roads adds to the problems. Our political parties must deal with the situation by taking proper measures and ensuring that the plans are implemented.
