- Hill Opp. to update global community on SSA scam

Darjeeling, June 21: The People's Democratic Front (PDF) is set to launch a website to provide details about the embezzlement of Rs 5.5-crore Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds to the 'international fraternity'.

The SSA is a national programme, which is also supplemented by external funding from the World Bank's International Development Association, UK's International Department for International Development and the European Commission. The SSA is aimed at achieving universalisation of Elementary Education in a time bound manner.

'Since the international fraternity has pumped in huge amounts for the project, they should know what is happening to their money. We will regularly update our website with details of every stage of the trial. We will also write to these agencies about the fate of the SSA in this part of the country,' said Madan Tamang, the chairman of the PDF, the anti-Subash Ghisingh coalition in the hills.

The site is expected to be developed within a month and the move is being seen as a ploy to create pressure on both the Centre and the state government to take strong note of the recently-exposed school scam.

The PDF today held a review meeting at the CPRM headquarters here and decided to form the youth wing. Manoj Dewan of the ABGL and Govind Chhetri of the CPRM have been nominated coordinators of the wing.

The Opposition has also sought an appointment with Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, during the chief minister's visit to the hill town on Friday, to seek a clarification on the government's stand on the multi-crore scam.

In the rival camp, A.R. Dewan, the former education councillor who has been accused by the PDF of having an active role in the scam, today filed a defamation case with the district court. The GNLF has engaged a battery of 17 lawyers to defend their case, expected to come up for hearing on July 21.
