Tatas to train farmers

Calcutta, June 15: Tata Motors will set up training centres to teach Singur’s displaced farmers skills they would need to work at the company’s proposed small-car factory.

The Tatas want 1,000 acres for their factory in Singur in Hooghly district.

The company will tie up with local industrial training centres and polytechnics in Serampore, Chandannagore and Chinsurah, commerce and industry secretary Sabyasachi Sen said. “Our effort will be to ensure that at least those who are solely dependent on agriculture are accommodated in the upcoming units.”

Delhi funds

Bengal urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya said the Centre had agreed to provide 80 per cent of the funds the state would need for infrastructure development.
