DVD/VCD reviews

Priyadarshan’s comic caper means a laughathon of sorts. With Paresh Rawal in tow, you can guess the outcome. Malamaal Weekly (Eagle; DVD, Rs 399) is set in a village that is very poor and oppressed by a witch-like landlady Sudha Chandran who has total control over their land and their lives. Her brother, Rajpal Yadav, a sight really, is one of those roadside Romeos creating havoc in the village. Om Puri is a doodhwala who’s made money by selling water more than milk. His daughter Reemma is in love with Riteish who works for Om just to remain close to Reemma. And Asrani, Riteish’s father, owes money to Om though he owns an elephant. Thus, each time their bickering gets to the point of fisticuffs, Asrani rushes and mounts his elephant safely out of reach of Om’s wrath. But all these people get together for a change when one among them wins a crore in lottery. Paresh, who sells lottery tickets, gets to the lucky guy first but finds him dead. And so starts a game of hide--seek with the villagers and the lottery inspector who’d give the money.

Along with the film there’s one additional DVD showing the making of the movie which is equally interesting with director Priyadarshan and all the artistes mouthing their experiences.
