Siliguri, June 1: In a bid to know the whereabouts of a colleague's son, an RPF constable along with a few others, allegedly beat up a teenager last night.
While two of the accused were arrested, 18-year-old Ranjit Singh of Babupara was shifted to the Siliguri district hospital but was later released.
Additional superintendent of Jalpaiguri police Tapas Das today said Ranjit's father Ram Bahadur Singh today lodged a complaint with the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) police against Ashish Majumder, the constable posted at NJP station, and his friend Priyas Das.
Based on the FIR, the police took prompt action and arrested the duo. They were produced in the Jalpaiguri court today. Later, they were sentenced to jail custody till June 13.
Last Tuesday, two boys including Prantik Das, son of Jiban Das who is a colleague of Majumder, went missing. The other missing boy is Tanmoy Deb. According to the FIR, lodged with the New Jalpaiguri police station today, Jiban, along with Ashish, Priyas and a few others met Ranjit last night and asked him about Prantik's whereabouts.
Ranjit, who is an employee of a finance company and an old friend of Prantik's, had said he didn't know anything, upon which Ashish and Priyas started beating him up. They also allegedly pricked him with needles, officer in charge, NJP outpost, S. Deosa said.
Narrating his ordeal after being released from hospital, Ranjit said: 'Yesterday, around 9 pm, Prantik's father and a few others came to my house. They asked me about his whereabouts. Prantik used to study with me. But six months ago, I left school and since then did not have any contact with him. I repeatedly told them that I did not have any idea of Prantik's whereabouts. But they did not believe me. Some of them started beating me up.'
Soon after the incident last night, Ranjit was admitted to the Siliguri district hospital.
