Soumya emerges surprise leader

Calcutta: Junior national girls’ champion Soumya Swaminathan emerged as the surprise sole leader with four points at the end of the fourth round in the Premiere section of the Karvy the Finapolis Chess for Youth Championship at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

In the third round of the competition organised by the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy, Soumya outwitted second seed IM Deep Sengupta and got the better of fourth seed Saptarshi Roy in the fourth round.

Top seed Abhijit Gupta of BPCL won both his rounds and is in the sole second spot on 3.5 points.

In the under-16 section, 12 players share the lead with four points in their tally at the end of the fourth round.

Soumya Swaminathan (4) bt Saptarshi Roy (3); Abhijit Gupta (3.5) bt Abhratanu Dutta (2.5); Punneet Jaiswal (3) drew Debaditya Sinha Biswas (3); Santu Mondal (2.5) lost to Deep Sengupta (3); Arghyadip Das (3) bt Anurag Jaiswal (2).

Junior U-16

Sandipan Chatterjee (4) bt Chadrashish Majumder (3); Rishav Mitra(3) lost to Satyajit Kundu (4); Sukanya Dutta (4) bt Paroj Chakraborty (3); Utsav Mukherjee (3) lost to Sayantan Das (4); Samrat Ghorai (4) bt Dhee Sankar (3).
