Gopichand appointed coach

New Delhi: Former All-England champion Pullela Gopichand was on Wednesday officially appointed coach of the national badminton team here.

“The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has appointed Mr Gopichand as the new national coach in place of Mr Vimal Kumar, who is no longer available owing to his other commitments,” BAI president B.K. Verma announced. Gopichand will hold the reins of the side till 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Gopichand said his focus would be on achieving success at the international level.

“It’s a great honour for me and it’s a big responsibility,” Gopichand said. (PTI)
