Financial aid for dropouts

Ranchi, May 31: In spite of struggling against odds, many students are still forced by circumstances to abandon their dreams of further education. But coming to the help of such students are some financial institutions that identify such students and provide them the necessary assistance.

One such organisation, Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA), is providing financial assistance to economically backward students at St Xavier?s College. Established two years ago, the organisation identifies students whose families have annual income below Rs 25,000.

At present, there are more than 100 such students who are being supported to pursue their education. Apart from academics, they are also enrolled in vocational courses so that they are in a position to support their families.

FAEA counsellor Shubankar said the students are provided scholarships as long as they want to study and the organisation helped many students across the state in building their career.

?We had a group of 27 boys from Simdega, whom we trained in computer hardware so that these boys from less privileged group could go back to their native place and earn a livelihood for themselves,? he said.

Santosh, one of the students, who is being financially supported by FAEA, said: ?My father works on daily wage and was unable to fund my studies. So, I had to leave the school. Through one of my friends, I approached the organisation that is helping me pursue my studies,? he said.

Some city schools are also providing financial support to the students. The school management of Oxford Public School is providing educational support to Ritesh Kumar, a student of Class IX. ?My teachers and principal have been providing me financial support. I have always stood first in the class and I want to become a doctor,? he said.

The school management also gave ?Mother Teresa Meritorious Scholarship? this session to 11 students who scored 90 per cent or above in the board examination and Rs 3,001 to those students who have secured between 88 to 90 per cent marks in the Class X examination.
