Haldia fire

East Midnapore, May 17: A fire broke out at the Indian Oil Corporation’s Haldia refinery, around 125 km from Calcutta, this evening, triggering panic among employees.

According to deputy general manager Hirak Dutta, the fire started around 8 pm in an open drain. The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

‘Rapist’ cop

Calcutta, May 17: A sub-inspector of police was arrested on Tuesday night from Jaynagar in South 24-Parganas for allegedly raping a girl. In her complaint, the girl alleged that Swarup Dhara had come to her house in February when she was alone on the pretext of searching for a criminal and raped her.

Life term

Krishnagar: Haru Ghosh, a local criminal, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a fast-track court in Nabadwip for hacking a middle-aged woman and her 10-year-old son to death last year.
