Information Act in final stages

Aizawl, May 11: Mizoram is moving towards full implementation of the Right to Information Act, according to an official statement issued by the Zoramthanga government yesterday.

The Mizoram government has so far appointed 290 state assistant public information officers, 139 state public information officers and eight first appellate authorities and/or departmental appellate authorities. The names and addresses of these officers can be seen in the records of the directorate of information and public relations, the nodal department.

More than 10 departments have received queries since the act was enforced in Mizoram along with other states on October 12, 2005, the statement said.

The law department has approved the Mizoram Right to Information Act rules but the budget is yet to be approved by the finance department. As notified by the government, fees are not supposed to be collected from citizens seeking information from the government until and unless the rules under the act are in force. The state information commissioner and his subordinate officers and staff will be appointed shortly, the statement added.

The state?s information department and the Administrative Training Institute have jointly organised training sessions on the legislation.
